One Billion Rare Movies III

One Billion Rare Movies ($6 a piece)

Rare 60′s/70′s/80′s TV movies, features and more One billion rare movies ($6 a piece) All discs are on DVD-R shipped (first class or priority) in color sleeves. The rare, unreleased and hard to find titles come from a wide variety of sources, VHS transfer, off the air, TVrips, DVDrips, digital cable recordings, and so on. In every case I’ve tried to find the best possible quality available including widescreen anamorphic. I’ve also authored and added many special features to some releases (vintage featurettes, trailers, interviews  etc) Most titles are Region 1 NTSC but some may be PAL region 2 native, in most cases of region 2 releases I’ve authored/converted a Region 1 version.

"Making Movies On Your Own II" Book Interview

The following Q&A's were copied & pasted  from a recent interview for an upcoming book. I created a blog page for it

2. What are your influences and aspirations and what got you into wanting to make movies? What drives you to make films?

My influences came out of the 70's and early 80's growing up. At that time there was a burning need to explore the realm and a lot of idealistic enthusiasm. I still have the drive to make films but, it's different. Since that initial desire and drive never actually materialized into a form of graduated success in the field (for lack of a better description) the kind of limited potential your repeatedly dealing with on a no budget scale becomes less and less vital. Less purposeful as the years pass.

3. Do you recommend going to film school or learning in the field? What do you think are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

Well, I went to film school briefly in 1988 mainly to borrow equipment and meet people, but i'd already been making films for 6 or 7 years. I think the best way is just to start doing it on your own, but of course these days with easy to use
extremely hi-quality (and cheap) camera and editing equipment available at everyone's fingertips film school is just a self-contained social environment for a collective of kids to make and exhibit their films.
In the filmmaking age things were a bit different as you had to learn how to use Super8, 16 & 35mm camera's,  flatbed editors, fullcoat dubbing, syncing dailies, etc. It was infinitely more complex and prohibitively expensive.

4. How important is your script? Does your budget determine your ideas or vice-versa?

Script is important but your execution and vision is what mostly counts. And yes, unfortunately budget DOES determine your idea's, your always limited to what you can do on limited budgets. With little or no money it usually produces the same kind of results you get in the world of micro-budget filmmaking, regardless of how imaginative you are. It DOES require somewhat large amounts of money to realize potential, not the kind of ridiculous over-bloated budgets Hollywood deals with, but ample amounts that are very difficult to raise and maintain any creative freedom over.

5. What are the benefits/disadvantages of working from your own script or someone else’s?

Well I guess that depends on how much creative control you have over your own or someone else's vision. I personally have never worked with someone else's script so it's hard for me to comment.

6. What equipment/format do you use and why? How has this differed from when you made your first movie to your most recent movie?

At this stage in technology in the micro-budget world i've been using the Canon DSLR's and Panasonic Prosumer cameras. The RED EPIC currently seems to be the favored tool in professional circles. The tools are always improving, but nothing will ever replace the photochemical look of film.

7. How do you handle your budget and funding? What costs money and what doesn’t?

Everything costs money, any kind of production or endeavor, doesn't matter if it's a film or not. Talent, equipment, wardrobe, props, locations, scale rates, you name it. How I handle my budget is usually a situation where I shoot what I can when I can, simple as that. In other words, shooting is very rare and sparse. The days are few and far between, mostly filled with general survival issues

8. Does where you live have an impact on getting your films made? And if so, why is this?

From what I hear it's easier to keep a dedicated group together willing to work for no pay outside of California. But I don't know for sure. People tell me location shooting is much easier outside of los angeles as it's easier to obtain permission or simply film without hassle (free of charge) in many other places, but it depends. The locations I'm usually interested in are very difficult or impossible to get access too without massive amounts of money.

9. How to you pick and choose your crew?

10. It comes down to pure practicality, who is around, available, willing, agreeable, enthusiastic, etc. The logistics of getting everyone available and together on the same day and hoping nobody drops out at the last min (which often happens, not their fault) and nothing else goes wrong is a miracle in itself. And this is partly why so many months/years/decades unnecessarily pass for what should amount to a weeks worth of work!

10. How do you get your actors? What is the weirdest story you have about an actor/actress?

I can't think of anything “weird” offhand. I look in every way possible. Years ago, prior to the internet age it was posting breakdowns in publications like Dramalogue and Backstage West, now it's all via online sites like and others. The process is still the same, your pouring through hundreds and hundreds of candidates, in my case, thousands. Maybe one in 500 has an interesting quality worth contacting and pursuing. Maybe one in 5000 is available and willing given the circumstances and/or minimal pay. It's extremely difficult (if not impossible) finding uniquely talented actors especially in the micro-budget independent world. But that's just my experience. It's always a Scarlett O' Hara search for me and practicality always wins in the end. In my experience the casting gods always find the right people even under the most unusual conditions. The film I'm doing now for example has multiple actresses playing Foxfur which isn't the way I planned it, but it was the ONLY way to shoot it. Not that (as usual) anyone will be able to make sense of it. But again, I attribute this to budget constraints. If I had the money I could make a perfectly sensible linear film.

11. How do you secure locations?

In my case it's often not a budgetary consideration so it's a situation where you hope (pray) nobody tosses you off a location in the first 5 minutes. I've been very lucky in that regard. But have also been thrown off hundreds of locations. One should always have back-up, locations if possible. Sometimes those locations just aren't possible.

12. How do you handle special effects?

Well again that's determined by budgetary constraints. You do what you can.

13. What about music? Do you usually have someone compose a score or is it music that already exists?

Again, budgetary constraints. Unless I had a 50 million dollar budget I probably would not be able to find or afford a composer good enough to satisfy my tastes. Unless I got darn lucky it would be a tough and frustrating search.

14. On average, how long does it take you to make a film. Talk about your first film and also about one of your more recent ones...

Often it takes FAR too long, months become years because the weeks and months and years go by with virtually nothing accomplished. Why? What else? Paralyzed by penniless pockets.

15. Is it easier or more difficult making movies now, as compared to your first movie?

I would say it's naturally far easier now because of the tools. That isn't necessarily a good thing. The field is much too over-saturated now. In many ways the production process is more difficult because people's lives are so much busier and more frantic. Getting people together on the same day for example and committed to a full shoot. Extremely difficult, sometimes simply impossible. But it all comes down to the same thing every time. Money.

16. How do you tackle the publicity of your films? What is the best way to go about this, from your perspective?

Your lucky to get any publicity. Some are better at making that happen than others. I've always said “control the circles of reality and you control the world” It has nothing to do with how 'good' or 'bad' something is, or 'talent'. Does such a thing even exist? It exists for the individual or camps of individuals. It's all subject to interpretation. Interpretation, interpretation interpretation. You can influence those things on the masses.

17. . How have you handled distribution? What are some of the horror stories you’ve encountered? To your knowledge, has anyone made money from streaming yet?

Virtually everyone I know has had trouble getting a fair distribution deal if they get ANY kind of distribution. And as far as money for streaming, I don't know. Unless your netflix I don't see how but I suppose there are others. Everything is so easily and readily available for free I don't see how but I imagine people are doing it.

18. How would you best describe your work? How do you want it to be remembered?

I don't feel my best work has ever been realized because i've never had the money to realize it.
Most of what I've done in the no budget experimental arena be it love letter/homage or satirical commentary is held within the boundaries of those parameters.

Miyuki Matsunuga from "Nasicaa" (2009)
19. Is it realistic for someone to make a living making low-budget independent movies?

It depends on what scale your talking about. Low budget indie movies that get financed distributed and released on some scale? Like for example a Todd Solendz or Guy Maddin? Yes, they seem to manage. But for the most part, absolutely not.

20.  What advice do you have for anyone who wants to be a “filmmaker”, whether it be a producer or director or writer? What are the three top things to do (and why) that would set them in the right direction?

Just be prepared for a LOT of work and very few rewards or results. You must be completely self-satisfied with your work, the world outside of yourself will not necessarily gratify you. But then there are many who have better results on that end.
